The costs of a sliding door system, everything at a glance

What does a sliding door system cost? More and more people realize what space you can save with a sliding door compared to a standard revolving interior door. This means that in renovations, but also in new construction, sliding doors are more often considered. But many people do not have a clear picture of the costs of a sliding door and a sliding door system. A quick answer to this is difficult because it depends on a number of factors and wishes. It is therefore important to go into this in more detail.

First of all, a distinction must be made between the different types of sliding door systems.

A separate rail system logically costs less than an entire sliding door system that can be built into a wall.

Quality also plays an enormous role, because in the beginning practically every sliding door runs smoothly on the rails. But what if…..

In this blog you will find an impression of the costs of a sliding door system, but also the things you should pay attention to when purchasing a sliding door system. We also give you some useful tips to save money.

What does the cost depend on?

The graphs above show that a built-in system is considerably more expensive to purchase than a separate rail system. That also makes sense, because with a built-in sliding door system you get a whole cassette and therefore also a part of the inside of your wall.

In terms of installation costs, a sliding door rail that comes in front of the wall is also cheaper than a built-in system that requires a structural adjustment.

In addition, it also depends on the materials, the design, the choice of your sliding door panel and which accessories are added to complete the system.

Tips for saving costs on a sliding door system

Choose a quality sliding door system

It may sound a bit contradictory when we talk about cost savings, because high quality products are often more expensive to purchase. But these costs pay for themselves over time.

Every sliding door system will run smoothly in the beginning, but what if the sliding door is not used often and therefore remains in one position? With a lesser quality, the wheels of the carriages will flatten over time. As a result, the sliding door will run less smoothly and will make noise when you slide it back and forth. As a result, the carriages/trolleys will wear out much faster.

Quality systems will last a lot longer and require less maintenance.

Will it be a sliding door in or in front of the wall?

A decision that depends on your taste, your budget and the architectural situation. A sliding door in front of the wall is cheaper anyway, but also consider the benefits of a sliding door that slides into the wall

With a rail system for the wall, you always keep a gap between the sliding door and the wall. As a result, you can suffer more from drafts and noise. With a sliding door in the wall you will not be bothered by this.

Another important consideration is the use of the wall. With a sliding door in the wall, you can use the wall on both sides to put something against it. If you have a sliding door that comes in front of the wall, you cannot use the side of the wall that the sliding door slides over. Finally, it is good to remember that a sliding door rail, which is mounted on the wall, is in sight and therefore determines your interior. A built-in sliding door system is timeless!

If you opt for a built-in system, it is good to know that there are systems where you can remove your door at a later time, without breaking work, for example to paint. These sliding door systems have no frame (architrave) around the door opening and the rear carriage rotates, so that the sliding door can be easily removed from the system.

Which sizes do you choose?

The costs of a sliding door system depend on the sizes that are chosen. Often the larger the system is, the higher the price increases. But it is also good to pay attention to which sizes are standard. Because these sizes are produced more often in the factory, they are often cheaper than a non-standard size. For example, a built-in system with a door opening width of 90 cm is often cheaper than a built-in system with a door opening width of 85 cm.

The standard sizes for built-in systems are:

  • Door opening width: 70cm, 80cm, 90cm and 100cm
  • Height door opening: 200 cm, 210 cm, 220 cm and 230 cm
  • Finished wall thickness: 100 mm

It is also good to know that the standard sizes are often in stock.
